Alaskan Fish Species Are Low in Calories, High in Nutrition

Fad diets come and go, but doctors and nutritionists will always agree that a diet low in calories and rich in nutrition, combined with a regular exercise regimen, is the best method for sustainable weight loss. Fresh Alaska seafood is the perfect staple for such a diet. Most of Alaska's seafood species, particularly the fish species, are low in calories but rich in taste. The added nutritional value contained in Alaska fish species outweighs the fish calories consumed.

In addition to being low in calories, Alaska seafood is low in saturated fat, high in protein and rich in essential vitamins and minerals. A "heart-healthy" food, Alaska salmon is also rich in Omega 3 oils, which are proven to reduce the risk of heart disease and may prevent certain types of cancer. Diets that are rich in seafood are also said to increase life expectancy.

Many health nuts enjoy incorporating nutrient-rich Alaska Salmon into their diets. Salmon is suitable for grilling, broiling, sauteing, baking, poaching, steaming and smoking, and it is low in fish calories. A 3.5-ounce serving of pink (humpback) salmon, the most abundant variety, contains 153 calories, 26 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat. The second must abundant Alaska Salmon species is sockeye (red) salmon, which is slightly richer in flavor. A 3.5-ounce serving of sockeye salmon packs 167 calories, 21 grams of protein and 9 grams of fat.

Alaska Whitefish, which tend to be lower in fish calories than salmon, is another delicious addition to a healthy diet. Whitefish is an umbrella term for several species of fish, including Alaska Pollock, Halibut, Sole, Cod and Black Cod. These fish tend to have a flaky white flesh that is mild in flavor, except for Black Cod, which has a distinctly richer flavor. Cod is the leanest whitefish, with just 105 calories and 22 grams of protein per 3.5 ounce serving. Pollock contains 117 calories and 25 grams of protein per serving, while Halibut, the "steak of seafood," contains 130 calories and 22 grams of protein. Rounding out the whitefish species is Black Cod, which packs 195 calories and 13.4 grams of protein.
